Friendship is of central importance to most young women and girls. Their friends are their reference group, their main influence and occupy much of their time. An important part of a mentor’s role is to help a young woman to negotiate her friendships, which can cause her both joy and pain.
Helping your mentee to understand friendship
Here is another exercise that you can do with your mentee:
One of the main traits of a good friendship is loyalty. How do we stay loyal to friends? First, we must know what it means to be loyal. What is your loyalty based on? For example, are you likely to have a trusting relationship with someone you know who always lies to teachers, parents, or other friends, even if you know (assume) that he or she doesn’t lie to you? Complete the worksheet below by adding all the rest of the ingredients of a good friendship:
